The Mount Vernon Music & Arts Festival is all about connecting and unifying our community through the love of various arts. We appreciate your interest in this year’s festival. We are moving forward with a positive attitude and hold on to the hope that our health situation will resolve in time. This year, there are 1,100 slots that must be filled in order to facilitate a smooth-running event. (This has increased by 30% since last year!) Available positions are listed below, you may choose more than one activity if desired.
Please consider how you can add your talents to support this grand activity. You will be glad you did, and we will too.

DOODLE BOARD HOSTS (15 Participants Needed)
These participants will literally wear a drawing board around their necks and on their bodies. As they walk around the festival, they will encourage guests and visitors to use dry erase markers to simply draw what they wish on the boards. A thank you, a quick swipe with a rag and you are off to the next guest at the festival. Fun to do if you like to engage with people. You may volunteer for more than one time slot. Available for any age. General meeting for all will be on July 26th.
REAL LIFE MANNEQUINS (10 Participants Needed)
These participants will be dressed in white, lycra bodysuits. You will become an unidentified form of the human body. In addition to the suit, you will be encouraged to find unique clothing to wear over the suit. As a group, you will engage the guests and visitors by simply creating forms and shapes of any mannequin seen at a clothing store. This is a great interactive activity for both you and the crowds. This is fun to do if you like to engage with people. This is limited to only the first 10 people who choose to do this activity. This group will be asked to present their art for each day of the festival. Time is TBD. Available for any age. General meeting for all will be on July 26th.
PUPPET OPERATORS (15 Participants Needed)
The festival will have an assortment of puppets on display and in use. All puppets are not threatening nor scary. Operators will simply walk around the festival and engage with the guests and visitors. No verbal communication is necessary. This is a passive engagement activity. The puppets will appear at various times throughout the festival. Available for any age. General meeting for all will be on July 26th.
FLASH MOB CHOIR (1000 Participants Needed)
Here is an activity that can be fun and astonishing at the same time. If you like music and if you like to sing, we want you! We are looking for as many singers as possible to participate in one, large vocal presentation, performing the song, “What a Wonderful World”. Music will be provided. Rehearsals will be very few, so we are relying on folks who know music and can learn it on their own. The only performance will be Saturday afternoon at the crossroads of Vine Street and South Main Street. Sign up and encourage all your music-loving friends to do the same. General meeting for all will be on July 26th.
“STOMP”-TYPE MOVEMENT (25 Participants Needed)
This is for the energetic folks of the community. We are looking for people who like to “move”, but not necessarily dance. This highly rhythmic activity will take coordination and practice. It is extremely fun, challenging and rewarding. This group will be asked to present their art for each day of the festival. Time is TBD. Available for any age. General meeting for all will be on July 26th.
PUSH “BUTTON” FOR DRAMA (50 Participants Needed)
This activity is for the actors of the community. An actual button will be placed in the middle of the intersection of Vine Street and South Main Street. A sign will be attached to the button that will say, “For Drama, Push Button”. When a visitor to the festival approaches and presses the button, some type of explosive drama, through acting, will take place in the downtown area. We need participants to be a part of the “drama” portion of the experience. We need a lot of actors who are not inhibited and like to act in an excessively big way. The more people the better. This group will be asked to present their art for each day of the festival. Time is TBD. Available for any age. General meeting for all will be on July 26th.
BE A LIVE SCULPTURE (25 Participants Needed)
Choose an everyday activity, like mowing the lawn. Bring a lawnmower to the festival. Place it at the intersection of Vine Street and South Main Street. Position your body in the act of mowing and freeze. Watch the crowd observe you as an actual sculpture while you observe their behavior toward you. This is a fun activity. The possibilities are endless, and the visitors love these forms of expressive art. This can be a solo or ensemble work, but participants will be asked to present their art for each day of the festival. Time is TBD. Available for any age. General meeting for all will be on July 26th.
BACK STAGE FESTIVAL FORCE MEMBER(S)
This is the foundational support of the festival. Hosts are simply facilitators of an activity. The presence of each host is a vital part of the festival. It is best that a host is 18 years of age, though a younger person can be a host, it would be appreciated if they had adult support.
BACK STAGE – CLEAN UP (25 Participants Needed)
This is a big one and we need help. Many hands can reduce the amount of time it takes to put this festival to bed. Large tents need to be dismantled; festival materials need to be put away. No task is hard but the more hands available the easier and faster the tasks are tackled and completed. Please consider this activity as this really needs many hands and many bodies.
BACK STAGE – SET UP (25 Participants Needed)
We need your help! Tents need to be put up. Barrels need to be filled with water. Straps need to be tightened. Displays need to be established and your help is SO needed. Consider how you can participate in the preparation of this fun festival. Hope to see you there.
FESTIVAL KICK OFF HOST – Woodward Opera House (10 Participants Needed)
This is a new event for this year’s festival. The main event is hosting the Cleveland Keys at the Woodward Opera House. This activity will include a catered dinner. Hosts will be asked to oversee the general needs of the guests and food services. You will be asked to engage the guests and help where and when needed. This will be a fun time to schmooze with community members, see the show and generally have a good time.
FESTIVAL KICK OFF HOST – The Memorial Theater (10 Participants Needed)
As the Festival Kick-Off is happening at the Woodward Opera House, so the Memorial Theater will be receiving a simulcast of the show from the Woodward Opera House. However, the Memorial Theater is also hosting a pre-show concert. This live band will be entertaining the audience in preparation for the live show being beamed from the Woodward Opera House. Hosts will be on hand to help seat guests and facilitate any needs should they arise.
BACKSTAGE - CHALK THE BLOCK (2 Participants Needed)
Hosts for this activity will simply be on hand to answer questions from artists, assist with any needs an artist may have, such as overseeing the artwork as the artist needs a restroom break. Or be on hand to keep the guests and visitors moving about the area. This is a great activity to watch the development of the artwork.
BACKSTAGE – SCULPTED AIR (1 Participant Needed)
This activity will be located inside the front entrance of the Woodward Opera House. Aaron Hay will be here on Friday to assemble his sculptural piece. For the remainder of the festival guests and visitors will have the opportunity to stop in to see the final project. This will be a great photo opportunity. The host for this activity is basically there to keep people from destroying the display by popping balloons (Yah. Go figure) while encouraging families to take photos.
BACKSTAGE – RIGHT BRAIN TENT (2 Participants Needed)
The hosts for this tent will have a fun time. Guests and visitors will have the opportunity to learn about the left and right sides of the brain. They will be able to engage optical illusions and magic eyes. They will also have the opportunity to use manipulatives that play tricks on the mind. This will be a fun area to be in. No scientific knowledge of the brain is needed, just an attitude of fun.
BACKSTAGE – KIDS ZONE (6 Participants Needed)
This will be a highly active area. Several “stations” will be set up. Each station will have some element of art and science related to the activity. Hosts will help to oversee, teach, demonstrate, and encourage guests to experiment with each station. It will be the responsibility of the host to keep activities and people moving. No station will be difficult. However, each activity will need an attendant to help manage the experience for all.
BACKSTAGE – FESTIVAL CHALLENGE ART SHOW (1 Participant Needed)
This year we will have an art show. This show will incorporate the work and talent of our community artists. Located in the ballroom of The Grand Hotel, guests and visitors will be encouraged to stop in and peruse the various pieces of art. Hosts will simply be greeters and protectors of the artwork.
BACKSTAGE – HOSPITALITY HOSTS (2 Participants Needed)
These ambassadors of the festival will be part of the “face” of the festival. At the festival tent, various handouts about the Mount Vernon, Knox County, and specifically the festival will be available. This is a great opportunity to visit with many visitors to our area.
BACKSTAGE – ARTS AND CRAFTS (2 Participants Needed)
The hosts for this area will be responsible for covering booths should an artist need a break for food, water, or restroom needs. Hosts will become additional eyes for the artist should their booth get busy with customers. Our hosts simply help to oversee the area, answer questions when needed, and help manage the needs of the artist should they arise.
BACKSTAGE – CAR/MOTORCYCLE CRUISE IN (25 Participants Needed)
This activity needs a lot of people to help. It is an easily manageable event if we have a festival force to lend a hand. Please consider your availability and sign up to help. You do not need to know about cars or motorcycles. Hosts are needed to help park cars, run around with 50/50 tickets, help pass out participation awards and other small but important tasks. This would be a great family activity. Please consider how you can help and sign up.
